Nordic Stagecraft came to the UK in 2022 but our roots go back much further, to ‘legendary’ singing teacher and actor Torsten Föllinger, whose radical philosophy sparked a revolution in performance training across Scandinavia.
Over the next thirty years, Föllinger’s methods were developed and refined by a new generation of performers at the Nordic School of Songpoetry, just outside Gothenburg, led by singer Hanne Juul and theatre director Sture Ekholm.
In 2020, work began on a research project which distilled the essence of this new approach to performance and opened it up to performers outside the Nordic countries. The author of this report – due to be published in 2023 – is the founder of NordicStagecraft, Jan Tone.
Lead instructor Jan Tone is a singer, performer and a published poet. He grew up in London, but has lived, worked and performed across Scandinavia. His qualifications include an MRes in Songpoetry*, a diploma in Songpoetic Performance from the Nordic School of Songpoetry, and a first-class BA in literature and language. Jan is an experienced tutor of both adults and children, valued for his ability to quickly establish a strong rapport with his students. He has lectured at the Fryshuset in Stockholm, and is engaged to teach at the Nordic School of Songpoetry in 2022/23.
